Junk-o-Tron is a casual game in which the player tries to match differently-shaped and colored blocks. On one side of the play area, a companion character appears and reacts to the game's progress. The developer and I discussed a few different aesthetics for the game as a whole, and we ended up deciding to go for a 1990s, pre-rendered 3D art style. Based on that style, on the patterns of blocks that would drop, and on the idea that the companion characters would be robots, I came up with a large variety of character designs and we picked some of our favorites to turn into full-fledged 3D models. Then, pre-rendered artwork of each was added to the game. Since they were all pre-rendered, I didn't have to worry too much about reducing polycount or baking textures. Each character presented some specific challenges and opportunities, and I'm pretty happy with how they all turned out.
